What is the Style Icon Afternoon Tea?

The Style Icon Afternoon Tea is an event that raises funds for the Nature Needs More (NNM). NNM is developing and testing innovative ways to undermine the illegal wildlife trade and stop the poaching of some of the world’s iconic creatures.

The Style Icon Afternoon Tea aim is to create an annual, global afternoon tea, where we are asking style icons of all ages and persuasions to join us for afternoon tea (if you dress up or not is completely up to you). By participating in this global tea party you are not only being part of this sophisticated international group, but you will also be raising funds and awareness for the world’s iconic creatures.

Where can events be hosted?

Events can be hosted anywhere you can have afternoon tea – at home, in a park, in a café, at a hotel, at a tea room, work, school or even on a boat.

Are the events private or public?

The person hosting the event will designate their event private or public. If it is a private event, you won’t be able to register for it unless you are invited by the host. Private events are NOT listed on the Join an Event page, so the host MUST invite anyone you they want to attend.

As the host you can invite friends and family via the My Event Page on the Dashboard (after you log in). You can send invites via Facebook, Twitter and Email.

If I want to host an event what do I do?

Click on the ‘Host An Event’ button and follow the prompts to register. After setting up your event you should invite your friends via Facebook or email - templates are provided for both from your My Event Page.

As the host of your event you have the ability to invite others to be part of your ‘team’ for fundraising purposes. Every member of your team is a fundraiser for your event in their own right and has their own fundraising page. That’s why you have an overall team fundraising goal (on the My Event Page) and each fundraiser sets an individual goal (on My Page).

Please note that inviting someone to be part of your fundraising team does NOT necessarily mean they have to attend your event. That’s completely up to you. Your event can even be ‘virtual’ in that it is simply established for assembling a team of fundraisers working towards a common goal.

You should customise your Event Page with your own images so it better reflects you (select Host Resources from the Dashboard on how to do that).

If I host the event do I have to give money?

The Style Icon Afternoon Tea is a celebration of people getting together to support the world’s wonderful wildlife and raise awareness of what Nature Needs More is doing to support their survival in the wild.

While, no one (host or participant) is obliged to give a donation, as a host it may be difficult to encourage your guests and team members to make a personal donation or fundraise, if you as the host, don’t commit to a fundraising target yourself.

Do I have to raise money to take part in an event?

You don’t have to, but if your host approached you to be on his or her team, then there may be an expectation that you raise money for the event. If in doubt, please contact your host; it is great to be able to show them your support.

In the end, every small donation helps towards us achieving our goal of stopping the illegal wildlife trade and saving these wonderful animals from extinction in the wild.

What currency are donations in?

All donation are in Australian Dollars (AUD).

Does everyone who attends the event have to give money?

Not everyone who attends has to donate money, but your host may ask you to share the bill of putting on the event, particularly if it is held in an external venue, such as a hotel or tea room.

If I use a hotel or tea room etc who pays the bill?

We recommend that as you invite people to an event where there is a bill to pay, such as in a hotel or tea room, that you clarify up front that the participants will be asked to share the bill. You cannot use the funds donated to cover the bill, as those funds go directly to NNM.

Where does the money raised go to?

All money raised goes to innovative ways to tackle the illegal trade in our precious wildlife such as in elephant ivory or rhino horn. Please visit www.natureneedsmore.org to learn more. For the inaugural Style Icon Afternoon Tea, the funds go to our demand reduction campaign.

What about cash or cheques?

We do not accept cash or cheque donations for this event, so if your host asks you to make a cash donation, please let us know straight away. No donations outside using the website are accepted.

Do I get a receipt for my donation?

Yes, when you make a donation through the website you will get a receipt via email.

Are there any style restrictions?

Given the funds are being raised for Nature Needs More, we request that people are encouraged not to wear certain items, for example fur, exotic leather accessories, ivory and coral jewellery etc

No matter the age of the item and we appreciate it might be from a pre CITES ban era, wearing them encourages new demand and gives traffickers a market place to launder illegally poached product.

If I want promotional material where can I get it?

After you have registered as a host, you have access to the Host Resources page from your Dashboard. We are constantly adding materialt hat you can use to promote your event to this page.

If you would like any other materials, please contact us via email.

Will you help me promote my event?

It is much more effective to use your own social media and friends to advertise your event. But yes, if you send Style Icon Afternoon Tea photos and information about your event and provide a statement saying that we can publish them on our social media site, we will promote your event. Please send your info to: siat@natureneedsmore.org

Remember, close to the event there may be a queue! So again, it is much more effective to use your own social media and friends to advertise your event.
